Moving into the Digital Age

In honour of our most recent International Archaeology Day on October 18th, our society hosted a free photogrammetry workshop using 123D Catch. This free software lets a user make a 3D model out of a photo of an object. As we found out, it was quite user-friendly and has the added bonus of offering users an app (iPhone and Android) for easy processing.

Before participants started their models, Dr. Kevin Fisher, one of our program coordinators, gave a lecture on digital technology and its substantial impact on archaeology today.

Then, with cameras at the ready and objects effectively placed, participants started taking the recommended number of photographs and then waited for the software to do the rest.

For a first try, most of the 3D images turned out quite well. Here's a sample:

If you missed our workshop but want to have a go at making your own 3D models, you can download the software here.
